Infrared sauna

What is it?

The radiant energy produced by an infrared sauna is the same as heat from the sun, with the exclusion of the ultraviolet rays. The infrared sauna emits waves that penetrate and relax the body as increased blood circulation warms the skin. A flood of sweat and toxins is released through the skin’s open pores as the warm blood circulates deeper through the body. The benefit is that it is a safe form of radiant heat at lower temperature (40 to 60°) than conventional dry or wet saunas (90 to 115°). This allows the impact to be deeper into the tissues thereby releasing 15–20% more toxins - principally cholesterol, fat-soluble toxins (i.e. herbicides and pesticides), heavy metals (i.e. mercury and aluminium), sulphuric acid, sodium, ammonia and uric acid. This unusually high concentration of heavy metals and fat-soluble toxins is not found in sweat from normal exercise. The infrared sauna use is a powerful means of cellular cleansing as it increases metabolism and blood circulation. In addition to its use for detoxification it also relaxes muscles, soothes the spirit and rejuvenates the body.

Why should I consider this treatment?

Each day we are continuously exposed to a continuous amount of chemicals and toxins in the environment. These toxins can be deposited in our joints, adipose tissue organ cells and eventually be associated with chronic degenerative health conditions.

At Primrose Clinic we wish to facilitate your path to living in optimal health. A part of this process is disease prevention. One of the most ideal ways to achieve this is through regular detoxication. The body’s innate ability to perspire is its way to self-regulate and clean. Infrared saunas create a fever (hyperthermia) to stimulate the body’s healing process. A fever is the body’s natural mechanism for releasing bacteria viruses, and other toxic organisims by sweating them out through the skin.

How does it work?

The heat from the ceramic heaters naturally penetrates your body very efficiently. It can penetrate 5 cm deep into your body and trigger your sweat glands to start functioning before your core body temperature rises. The effect is that you are able to perspire for longer at a lower temperature.

Is it safe?

Very safe. It does not emit dangerous rays like ultraviolet or microwaves. Those are the opposite end of the spectrum. Infrared simply means “below red” or “invisible”: when campfire embers glow red, the rocks next to them are hot, but not red. Those are infrared.

Do I need to prepare for a session?

It is optimal to have a session fully hydrated. So drink a pint of water before, during and after. (Filtered water is freely available at the clinic.) Avoid eating immediately before a session. Ideally, have a light meal an hour before. If using regularly, it is important to replace your salts. Salts and supplements can be purchased at Primrose Clinic.

For an enhanced experience, users of the sauna can bring their iPods, or the like, as there is a connection that allows music to be played in the cubicle.

What are the health conditions
that the sauna can benefit?

Psoriasis and other skin conditions - the skin is the body’s largest organ and a major eliminative channel. The sweating process gently and effectively removes the toxins through the skin, taking the burden from the liver and kidneys, and therefore alleviating the symptoms of psoriasis.

Weight loss. Studies reported in the Journal of American Medical Association shows that 30 minutes of continuous sweating in a sauna will burn 300–600 calories, similar to rowing or running for the same duration of time.

Arthritis. The heaters deeply penetrate major joints and aid in soft tissue repair. The energy from the heat helps to break up lactic acid, which can accumulate and cause muscle cramping. The soft tissue, and connective tissue which concerns arthritics, is made more supple and pliable and less brittle and tight.

Fertility. Before conceiving it is recommended that both partners do a full series of 10 sessions to fully detoxify. It is also recommended to begin 3 months before you conceive as toxins continue to be released for several months after the therapy is completed.

Infections. Raising the body’s temperature powerfully assists the body to kill fungi, bacteria, parasites and viruses. Many people have a low body temperature and for this reason cannot get rid of infections.

Cancer. Any doctor who has studied the literature on infrared saunas states unequivocally that regular sessions will expunge toxins known to cause cancer, including lead, mercury, plastics and phthalate, dioxin and heavy metals. Dr Sat Dharam Kaur, ND, author of The Completely Natural Medicine Guide to Breast Cancer, supports the use of infrared sauna preventively for breastvcancer and suggests that they need to become a regular part of our lives to protect ourselves and our children from breast cancer.

Are there contraindications for
using the sauna?

You should avoid infrared sauna use completely in
the case of:

Stroke ( type caused by bleeding from the brain)

 Severe aortic stenosis

 Brain tumours

 Multiple sclerosis

 Silicone implants

You should check with your doctor in the case of:

Pin rods and implants such as cochlea implants

 Medicines applied by skin patches
